A knocked-out or fractured front tooth is one of the most common injuries in youth sport, and unlike a bruise it does not heal on its own. A tooth lost at fourteen becomes a lifetime of crowns, bridges or implants - a far larger cost, in money and in appointments, than the guard that would have prevented it.
The guards sold in stores are boil-and-bite: softened in hot water and bitten into shape. They are better than nothing, but they are bulky, they loosen as they are chewed, and they make talking awkward - so they end up pushed to the side of the mouth or left in a bag. A guard that is not being worn protects nothing.
A custom guard starts from an impression or scan of your own teeth, so the finished appliance grips the teeth precisely rather than being held in by clenching. That single difference is what makes it comfortable enough to actually wear for a full game.
